how did u do this ? its awesome , i am terrible with oils , how do you get it so smooth ? thin the paint with turps ? high quality brushes ?

thanks :) Sorry the photo of it isnt the best, i'll try and take a better one later.

I use artist hog brushes, using fans for blending quite a lot.

I've also used several glazes to smooth out the colours where necessary, but generally thin them out with linseed oil, not turps - it dont really like using turps for thinning out the paint.

I was done on a green background which helps bring out depth in the skin tones and am loving using naples yellow and rose dore for a good base flesh tone.

thanks for that , ive never liked the idea of using turps as a thinner , but because it is the most readily available for me , i use it , i also to really quick paintings on impulse , kind of like rough sketches almost , so i dunno lol . thankyou for the reply :

if you do use turps, use distilled turps only...

i've read lots about 'thick over thin' which basically means you start off with the first layer very thin with distilled turps and then gradually get more 'oily' with your mixes and layers... this stops the painting cracking.

i use a turps thinned layer very first of all for the base colour (usually green or orangey brown) but theres very little of that layer left showing when the painting is finished.

you can use liquin (a resin) to speed up they drying of your oil paint but it is quite expensive...

have you tried using acrylics for your 'quick' work and sketches?
